A rare and unique witness of the past is this antique whistle and rattle pendant made in natural red coral and yellow gold from Victorian era.
Just to think that this elegant gold and coral whistle and rattle with bells was once a toy and talisman to ward off illness for mothers and their babies.
The pendant would have hung by the loop on the whistle from a ribbon or chain around the neck or waist of a child. Rattles of this type were not only seen as emblems of prosperity and social standing but also, and perhaps more important, because they had the purpose of safeguarding the child as coral has been considered a potent amulet against disease and evil since ancient times.
Here is presented a beautiful example form Victorian era, crafted in 14 Kt yellow gold, top a whistle, the body is embellished by decorative engravings and culminating with a branch of red natural coral.
